Lately I have been reproducing "Grodner Tal" dolls. Also known an "Peg or Penny Wooden" and "Tuck Comb," these dolls are not being reproduced in hand carved wood today possibly because they require a great deal more carving than Queen Anne style dolls.
Early craftsman in the Grodner Tal region stopped making these dolls because as time went on the carving became simpler and simpler and they became scorned by serious wood craftsmen. I think it is time to bring these delightful little ladies back into the spotlight and give them the respect they deserve as charming examples of early doll making.
